Review by LocIt’s scary to realize you’re getting older. A movie like Dan in Real Life is firmly planted in the adult comedy genre. The issues the problems the drama the humor basically anything and everything in this film is a slice of life for the mature adult. Not to say you won’t enjoy it if your daily concerns revolve around celebrity gossip or the latest news on Fallout Boy. However things may resonate a little more if you’re staring down the barrel of career path and daycare for the kids. Quick hit: pretty good flick. Dan in Real Life focuses on Steve Carell’s character of Dan Burns a local advice column writer in the New England area. Strangely enough there’s about five whole minutes devoted to the column-writing skills of Burns. Instead the film locks in on the “real life” portion examining how the mundane difficulties of life can creep up to wreak havoc. For the two second recap: Dan Burns is a widower with three daughters ranging from the student-driver-high-schooler to the hormone-possessed-lovestruck-teen to the sweet-and-smart-grade-schooler. The family heads off for the annual mini-reunion where all the siblings gather around to partake in the most picturesque family sharing one could possibly imagine. Gender-war crossword puzzle battles – check. Full-family outdoor workout sessions – double check. Family-talent-show-after-dinner gaming – but of course. Yes this is the most perfect family ever and their annual traditions are amazing. So how does the chaos ensue? First. Dan has been having a more difficult time with his daughters. One wants to drive and drive and drive providing a small sometimes humorous problem for our Dan. The second is convinced that she’s found true love at the tender age of 14 which causes bigger sometimes funnier moments for Dan. The last daughter is young and precious offering no real problems until the dramatic climax where Dan must face the fact that he’s ignored her one too many times. Boo hoo. However the real meat of this story lies in Dan’s blossoming romance with Juliet Binoche’s Marie. After a rough drive to the family household. Dan takes a break from the family to the local bookstore. There he meets the lovely Binoche and both spend a picturesque morning together in the picturesque New England setting. But what happens when Dan finds out that the lovely Marie is actually his brother’s new girlfriend?? Oh let the hijinks begin. Too bad the hijinks are pretty low-key. There are the awkward let’s-keep-it-to-ourselves moments. And there are the Dan-goes-on-a-date-and-Marie-gets-jealous exchanges. The hiding-in-the-shower scene is entertaining and the pancake breakfast is good for a chuckle. Yet overall the comedy aims for a mundane nuanced humor which is good but not great. Of course things get worse and everything blows up in everyone’s faces but that comes at the conclusion of the film and wraps up in around ten minutes. If placed in the hands of less talented engaging actors. Dan in Real Life would have fallen very flat. However. Steve Carell is quite genuine as he steps out of the man-child borderline mentally-challenged persona he’s developed so well. Carell adds a bit of underlying humanity to his role nothing so breathtaking that it’s amazing but enough to get you caring about his plight. Binoche is quite charming and the chemistry between the two is adequate. Keep in mind that these two don’t deliver smoldering tense-filled exchanges but seeing them together is nice enough. Rounding out the cast you get Dane Cook as the brother. He’s fine and his limited screen time is probably a good thing. Diane Weist is the passive-aggressive matriarch and John Mahoney of Frasier fame is the dad. The rest of the huge family is very good as well and they’re able to recreate the feeling of family in a genuine way. Overall. Dan in Real Life is solid fare. The writing and plot are pretty good and the leads are talented enough to pick up the slack. As mentioned before a weaker cast would have led to disaster but this collection of performers delivers a good film. Out of a 200 word advice column. Dan in Real Life meets the deadline with a 150 word count. It’s a good film and better if you find yourself facing similar life issues.

"Guilty Pleasures, Part 1" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-02 02:14:24

We all have those things that we are embarrassed to adjudge that we like. Things that cultured come up educated populate shouldn’t like. But we do and if you are like me are a bit sheepish about them. So here is the first of my many guilty pleasures posts.(places paper take over head…)Advice ColumnsIt started innocently enough with Dear Abby and Ann Landers. I was lucky that my paper ran both of these on alternate days. But then Ann died and my cover began to run a cooler hipper advice column. Very Gen-x. I like the way she thinks. But it left me wanting more. Then I started reading designate magazine again and was added to my advice intake quickly followed by on MSN. But these only came out once a week or so and they just didn’t feed the jones. Desperation soon set in. I was reading and I am truly ashamed to admit this the column in Ladies Home Journal online. Ladies. Home. Journal. Truly a low inform. I like reading the columns for a couple of reasons. First is the “Gosh. I’m glad that isn’t me” factor. I take comfort in knowing that no matter what is going on in my life. I’m not communicate show fodder. I don’t think I like what that says about me but there it is. Second is the “If my soon-to-be-teen came to me with a similar problem what would I say?” factor. I could work out my own response in my mind as kind of a warm up. Third is the critic factor. Many times I wholeheartedly disagree with the advice and snort in derision. I evaluate actually that is my favorite part. But then. I discovered something truly sinister perhaps even evil. Cary Tennis’ column in salon com. Daily. With comments. Lots of comments. Lots of very vocal opinionated comments. And oh what comments those are! Most days they are better than the column itself! If Mr. Tennis is off base then by golly his faithful readers will let him know in no uncertain terms. They also tell him when he is right on. There are comments sympathizing with the letter writer and comments telling the letter writer that they only have themselves to blame for their situation. It is a delicious read. I enjoy this way too much and may undergo to change an intervention. So there you have it. My secret shame. My husband knows I read the ones in the paper but he has no idea how bad the problem really is (until now anyway he reads my blog). Am I the only one with this problem? I can’t be since there are so many advice columns. Do you read any of these? What’s your opinion? And please don’t tell me about any I don’t experience about. I don’t need that kind of temptation! I'm all things to all people. Mom? analyse. Wife? Check. Cellist? Check. Volunteer? Check. Sports Fan? Check. I could go on but you get the idea. See that underneath here? It's an archive. Check it out. There might be something you like. Maybe not. Who knows but you never know unless you try. Oh and while I don't mind the lurkers. I really like it when you comment every once in a while. I might even go back and visit you provided I get a good cerebrate (hint).

-- Steve Carell stars in "Dan in Real Life" as a dejected widower and advice columnist who suddenly finds a romantic spark with a woman (Juliette Binoche) at bookstore while vacationing in his hometown who might be his brother's girlfriend. PG-13. 1hr 35min Reviewed for Arizona Reporter by Harvey S. KartenDAN IN REAL LIFETouchstone Pictures/ Focus FeaturesGrade: B-Directed by: Peter HedgesWritten By: Peter Hedges. Pierce GardnerCast: Steve Carell. Juliette Binoche. Diane Cook. John Mahoney. Emily Blunt. Dianne Wiest. Alison PillScreened at: Regal E-Walk. NYC. 10/20/07Opens: October 26. 2007 The call engrave in the movie “Dan in Real Life,” who writes an advice column for a local paper while he hopes for national syndication has this counsel to spread when one asks him what we should plan for: “Plan to be surprised.” If Peter Hedges who directed the film co-written with Pierce Gardner expects the audience to be surprised he is probably mistaken. “Dan in Real Life” is conventional with no startling insights and nothing we undergo not seen before. Nevertheless. Steve Carell whose poker-faced appearance alone can jolt people’s funny-bones has moved a couple of steps up from his role in “Evan Almighty,” which a potential audience avoided in droves. (It was not as bad as some critics have said though.) Hedges allows us to eavesdrop on an extended family that is functional: each member contributes a special skill in a talent show while enjoying games of Scrabble and good wholesome intelligent talk. Despite the mutual love of grandfather Poppy (John Mahoney) grandmother Nana. (Dianne Wiest) daddy Dan (Steve Carell). Dan’s brother Mitch (Dane create from raw material) and Dan’s three daughters a triangular romance threatens to end up the joyful reunion of the large group in Poppy and Nana’s spacious Rhode Island digs. The combination of broad comedy and simpler truthful moments is already a signature concept of director Hedges whose “Pieces of April” in 2003 deals with a New York City woman who with her boyfriend tries to prepare Thanksgiving dinner for her dysfunctional family. While “Dan in Real Life” is in no way as quirky as Hedges’s compose for “What Eating Gilbert Grape”–about a young man in a dead-end town whose is responsible for caring for his retarded brother and his obese mother–it is a reasonably satisfying sentimental comedy anchored by Carell’s standard deadpan delivery and klutzy physicality. The story takes off when Dan meets-cute the lovely Marie (Juliette Binoche) in a bookstore hitting it off so well that after an extended chat over coffee. Dan a widower can’t wait to rush back to his family to express them that he’s found the woman of his dreams. Marie shows up shortly thereafter with her new boyfriend who happens to be Dan’s brother thereby providing the impetus for another go of The Eternal Triangle. While an envious Dan flirts with Marie the two must keep their chemistry and previous meeting a secret from the family. No matter that Mitch fixes his brother up with a sexy date. Ruthie Draper (Emily Blunt). Dan has eyes only for Marie while Marie gives no real hint that she intends to break up with Mitch. The most laugh-evoking farcical scene occurs when Dan and Marie shutting the bathroom door to havea tete-a-tete away from the family are interrupted by one of Dan’s daughters. Dan hides in the shower while the teen chats with Marie asking her advice. What follows can easily be predicted.“Dan in Real Life” gets its comic impetus from the concept that the audience is several steps ahead of characters. Mitch who is better looking the athletic member of the clan has no idea that he might change state a cuckold while Marie and Dan are the more likely bring together because of their mutual intelligence. Dane Cook gets the bulk of the laughs as the in-the-dark bon vivant who lacks Dan’s verbal talents while Dan’s three rambunctious daughters played by Alison Pill. Brittany Robertson and Marlene Lawston elicit the difficultyy of a single man’s raising three girls on his own.
